Martin Thomas

Martin Thomas is a cultural historian, documentary maker, and professor of history at the Australian National University. He is presently based at King’s College London where he co-directs the Menzies Australia Institute. As an interviewer, he has recorded more than thirty whole-of-life interviews for the Oral History and Folklore Program of the National Library of Australia. He has written or edited eight books, including The Many Worlds of R. H. Mathews: In search of an Australian anthropologist, winner of the 2012 National Biography Award. His documentary work includes many features for ABC radio and Etched in Bone (2018), a film about the removal of human remains from Aboriginal mortuary sites by the American–Australian Scientific Expedition of 1948. His essay on this subject won the 2013 Calibre Essay Prize.
