My Eyes Are Not Blue
Patrick Hanrahan
Minerva Press. £8,99

This first novel by Patrick Hanrahan is set in Melbourne. The theme looks promising: what happens when you decide to give up sex as amusement. Vaughan Carton is about thirty, he has a job and a house, and all these women – Karen, Pilar, Marie, Ursula – just won’t let him alone, even when Vaughan has to slap one of them round a bit. (‘Far too hard’, the narrator decides.)
