Climate change is often framed as a number of battles: between science and opinion, sustainable development and economic growth, government control and individual freedom, or environmentalists and business leaders. All of these are simplifications of the complexity involved in our modern world’s developing adequate responses to human-caused climate change.

David Karoly is a professor of climate science in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science at the School of Earth Sciences, University of Melbourne. He was Chair of the Premier of Victoria’s Climate Change Reference Group in 2008–09 and is a member of the Science Advisory Panel to the Climate Commission, established by the Australian government in 2011.
