Robert Stuart, having failed to gain admission to Sandhurst, was sent to Australia to complete an agricultural course at Hawkesbury, obtain some experience and then set himself up as a grazier. As money was not forthcoming for the third stage of his plans, he went to Bougainville instead, and became a planter. His autobiography tells of his years in Australia, his work in developing the plantation, and his experience during the war and the changes of post-war administrations until 1968. His account gives the reader insight into the mentality as well as the activity of the pre-war planter, a type which now probably exists only in Rhodesia.
