It was in 1962 that Max Harris and Rosemary Wighton asked me to write a monthly column of Australian book design for their Australian Book Review. In 1972, perhaps in preparation for a final exit, they changed the format, and I retired into well-deserved obscurity. They must have felt, and I did not disagree with them, that the school-masterly analysis of individual books – they were allotted ‘picas’ from nil to three – had served its purpose.
