Victorian Premier's Literary Awards

This week, Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley, announced the twenty-one works shortlisted for the 2016 Victorian Premier's Literary Awards, which include the Victorian Prize for Literature. Worth $100,000, the Victorian Prize for Literature is Australia's richest single literary Award. ABR readers might notice ABR editor Peter Rose's poetry collection The Subject of Feeling (UWA Publishing) on the poetry shortlist. Listen to him read the title poem for Poem of the Week.

  • Peter Rose was fortunate to be seated in the stalls for King Lear on opening night. The acoustics of the Ros Packer Theatre are notoriously fickle. At the second performance (Monday 6.30pm), people in the front rows of the dress circle found some actors virtually impossible to hear - including Robin Nevin as the Fool. Max Cullen in the key role of Gloucester did not seem confident of his lines, leaving us on tenterhooks as to whether he would manage to remember them.
