ABR Patrons' Fellowship
Australian Book Review seeks applications for the inaugural ABR Patrons’ Fellowship, a major new program as the magazine nears its fiftieth birthday in 2011.
The Fellowship scheme is intended to reward outstanding Australian writers, to enhance ABR through the publication of major works of literary journalism, and to advance the magazine’s commitment to critical debates and literary values. It is hoped that two to three Fellowships will be offered each year.
We are seeking a substantial article, either a profile of a major literary figure or a discursive essay with literary/cultural themes.
The Fellowship is worth $5000.
Writers with strong publication records are encouraged to apply.
They have until 1 September to do so.
The ABR Patrons’ Fellowship is funded by our Patrons, of whom we now have close to seventy. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our Patrons, who have supported the magazine through tax-deductible donations of $250 or more. These donations are vital for the magazine’s future.
‘The best journal of words and ideas. Supporters can be proud of their judgement.’

Who can apply?
The ABR Patrons’ Fellowship is open to established Australian writers. The successful applicant will be a writer, scholar, journalist or commentator with a strong publication record. This particular ABR initiative is not aimed at students or emerging writers.
Expected outcomes
The Fellow will be expected to complete the project within six months. He or she will produce an article of between 6000 and 10,000 words for publication in the magazine. The Fellow will also be available for any media commitments that arise in the promotion of the Fellowship program.
What is ABR offering?
The ABR Patrons’ Fellow will receive $5000 – half on commencement of the Fellowship, half on its satisfactory completion. The Fellow will receive one Economy return fare to Melbourne (if necessary). Office space and a computer will be available during the Fellow’s visit to the ABR office. No contribution to accommodation costs is possible. The Fellow will work closely with the Editor of ABR.
Selection process

No correspondence will be entered into once the decision has been announced. ABR reserves the right not to award a Fellowship during a particular round.
